I moved to Franschhoek in the summer to continue my journey of adulthood. The days were longer, the sun was bare and I felt the world was my oyster. The season had left me without even saying goodbye and I was abruptly greeted with the rainy season. Searching for the same warmth the summer days brought, I found Mother Dough.
Walking up to the bakery and opening the door, felt like I was walking into my own home, it was warm and welcoming with the soft lighting, the smell of fresh bread and a hot cup of coffee. The bakery has a wide range of sweet treats and fresh loaves of sourdough bread staring straight at me. I decided to get a classic croissant which was light and flaky. To pair with my cup of coffee, I got a cinnamon bun which was topped with a tarty glaze. The cinnamon bun was sticky and moist with the perfect amount of glaze to balance out all the sweetness. The bakery offers on-the-go gourmet sandwiches and you are given an option to toast the bread, which I will never say no to. I got the three cheese sandwich with tomatoes and it was a melt in your mouth moment, perfect for the rainy day.
I always assume that the bakery's best seller is their sourdough donuts because they will definitely be sold out after 13:00. I've adapted to the early morning breakfast run because who wouldn't want a donut with their coffee. Some people meditate before they start their day, I speed to the bakery in sweatpants and the closest jersey I can find to get a donut.
Mother Dough makes winter days warmer, with every bite I could taste the love from the staff. This cozy spot is for early mornings, lunch breaks and late afternoon snacks.
